Bifocal reading glasses are useful for the times you’re working both close and at a distance at the same time. For example, when driving a car. When driving, you have to look out at a distance watching the road and traffic. Distance is when you require no magnification and when you look through the upper unmagnified portion of the lens.
But periodically, when you glance down at the dashboard, you may need proper magnification. Bifocal reading glasses provide that magnification for you at the bottom half of their lenses.
The same is true when you watch TV while, at the same time, reading a book, looking at your smartphone, or reading the newspaper.
Surprisingly, Ben Franklin is credited with the invention of bifocal lenses for reading glasses long ago. But it wasn't until 1955 that Irving Rips developed the first progressive lens. But progressives are a story for another day. So much for history.
